Leiden is an inspiring Dutch city with many architectural monuments and museums. It is located in the south-west of the country, in the province of South Holland, on the river Oude Rijn. The Old City, which is the second-largest in the Netherlands, is well-preserved. Old buildings and streets are filled with special energy there. Leiden was mentioned for the first time in 922. In those days, it was the possession of bishop Utrecht. In the 12th century, in the place of fusion of two Rijn arms, Leiden castle was erected. Today, it is the oldest architectural monument in the city. Many buildings of the 16th - 17th centuries, including the University, and also the following ancient churches — the church of St Peter, the 14th century, and the church of St Pancras, the 15th century, were preserved until now. Many painters, scientists, and prominent personalities lived and draw inspiration in Leiden. A great Rembrandt was born here.
